Yesterday (October 20th) marked the opening of the highly-anticipated £165 million Victoria Gate shopping centre in the heart of Leeds, the only major retail scheme to launch in the UK this year.
With this development, Leeds has shot up to third position in Javelin’s UK retail rankings and will also be recognised as the biggest premium retail and leisure venue in Northern England, securing the city’s position as one of the major players in the Northern Powerhouse.
Councillor Richard Lewis, the council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning said the developmental focus should now shift to providing high-quality office space for Leeds professionals.
“We need to have grade A space and Leeds has a shortage,” he said.
This week, Bruntwood announced the first deal to take place at its new building in Leeds, Platform, with law firm Shoosmiths signing a 10-year deal to take a full floor of the building. Formerly recognised as City House, the building will provide an exciting new workspace, where businesses can connect.
The new office is part of Shoosmiths’ strategy to take a larger share of the UK legal market and its expansion into Leeds is part of its plan to bring new people and clients into the firm.
Craig Burrow, director at Bruntwood added: “Having worked on Platform for a number of years, I’m thrilled to secure our first letting with Shoosmiths and finally see this building brought back to life and kick start the regeneration of this area.
“Platform is going to be a major development in the type of workspace that Bruntwood offers, creating an environment where companies and individuals can network and connect with each other, providing added impetus to business creativity and growth.”
Bruntwood are also looking forward to the next few weeks when 3 Sovereign Square completes - a new office, retail and leisure development in Leeds which is part of a trio of buildings with a new green space as its focal point.
The Sovereign Square development is a key part of the plan to connect the city core and the planned South Bank development.
Bruntwood’s 3 Sovereign Square development in the centre of Leeds will provide over 80,000 sq ft of Grade ‘A’ workspace as well as 10,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, bringing even more jobs to the city.
